The main decision is construction: 2.5-layer coastal jackets are lighter and pack small, while 3-layer fabrics such as GORE-TEX shrug off days of repeated soaking and abrasion. Offshore cuts add a high storm collar, a proper hood and inner cuff seals; coastal jackets trade some of that for weight and freedom of movement. Dinghy sailors should look at smocks instead — a pull-over cut seals better against constant spray. Try your size over a fleece or mid layer, not a t-shirt, because that is how you will wear it.
